Every week in Sport Medicine, we typically follow the same schedule, incorporating different topics and new skills.
Every Friday, we have the opportunity to participate in a Sim Lab, where we explore a hands-on experience with a patient based on what we have learned most recently. So far, I have been able to perform CPR on a mannequin, diagnose a patient with an ankle fracture, and treat a patient with heat illness. This hands-on experience provides a sense of the real world compared to learning in the classroom.
On Thursdays, we take notes on a new Medical Terminology lesson, which we are typically tested on the following Tuesday. Thursdays are a good relax day, as I enjoy taking notes.
Throughout the first few weeks, a few skills I have already learned include; how to tape and ankle, 7 different ankle tests for diagnosing a patient, how to tape a thumb, how to tape/ support an arch, how to treat and diagnose a patient with heat illness, how to perform CPR and act in a situation where a patient is unresponsive, how to use an AED, and much more. While these tasks are confusing and difficult at first, practice has and will continue to assist me in mastering each one of them.
In my future, I plan on becoming a registered Dietician. Although these skills may not be directly related to my preferred profession, they go hand-in-hand. If I become a dietician for a sports team, I would be able to help out when players face injuries. Also, if I come across an unconscious person while living my daily life, I will know how to assess the situation and may even be able to save a life.
